Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has made an honest transfer revelation ahead of the January transfer window, following Benjamin Sesko’s injury in the 2-2 draw vs. Tottenham Hotspur.

United play out draw vs. Tottenham

United have now extended their unbeaten run to five games after holding Spurs to a draw in North London on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils took the lead through Thomas Frank’s former favourite at Brentford, Bryan Mbeumo. The Cameroonian did well to head home a sublime cross from Amad.

Chances for both teams were few and far between but the game kicked into life in the final minutes.

Substitute Mathys Tel restored parity, producing a swivel and powerful strike with six minutes of normal time left on the clock.

Spurs turned it around into stoppage time when Richarlison flicked in Wilson Odobert’s attempt. Richarlison broke into a wild celebration, taking off his shirt. However, his jubilation didn’t last for too long as Matthijs de Ligt made it 2-2 with 90+7 on

Aside from the thrilling finish, the other major talking point was the injuries picked up by Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko.

Maguire was forced off with what looked like a hamstring issue while Sesko – who was thrust into the action in the 58th minute – picked up an issue after a Micky van de Ven challenge. Sesko went down the tunnel in visible discomfort. In his post-match TV interviews, Amorim gave a concerning injury update on the Slovenian.

Speaking during his press conference, Amorim admitted that United may look to strengthen their attacking options in January if Sesko’s injury is serious.

Asked if Sesko’s issue is serious, Amorim replied, “I have no idea. Because it’s the knee, we never know.”

Sesko had two good chances to get on the score sheet but he couldn’t make the most of either opportunity. Amorim insisted that this is not due to a shortage of confidence.

“No, I think… I think that [lack of confidence] is not the biggest concern now.”

“That happened in the same way that he is not scoring and then he scores two goals in the next two games [Brentford and Sunderland], so that happens, especially with a striker. I’m more concerned with an injury because it’s in the knee and I don’t know.”

“We need Ben to be a better team.”

Amorim also noted that the expected absences of Amad, Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui due to the Africa Cup of Nations could influence United’s January transfer thinking.

“We have to check everything, we have to check what has happened with Ben.”

“Of course, we are going to have a problem there [with AFCON], but we already knew. Then you can prepare that in the summer, but then you have a lot of players in the summer who are not going to play because it’s one game per week. The management of that situation is going to be hard.”

“But let’s see when the window is open, if we can improve the team and try to prepare something that happened. Until then, we have to take the chance.”

The draw with Tottenham has left United in seventh place in the table.
