Manchester United are preparing for one of the most significant fixtures of their season, but Ruben Amorim has confirmed that his squad will be without two important defenders when they meet Liverpool on Sunday.
Lisandro Martinez, who has been sidelined since February with an ACL injury suffered against Crystal Palace, has only just returned to team training. Although his progress has been steady, Amorim was clear that he will not feature at Anfield.
“Licha is not available,” the United manager explained. “Near [to a return] but he is just returning.”
The Argentine’s absence has been felt across the campaign, with United struggling to establish consistency in central defence. His leadership and composure have often been highlighted as crucial, and his return could prove decisive later in the season.
Alongside Martinez, versatile full-back Noussair Mazraoui will also miss the trip. The Moroccan has managed just three appearances all season due to a persistent thigh problem. Amorim admitted that he could not provide a clear date for his comeback.

For a squad that has dealt with injuries in key areas, Mazraoui’s unavailability restricts United’s options further, especially against a Liverpool attack renowned for its intensity and width.
Captain Bruno Fernandes was another player under the spotlight this week. He did not take part in training on Thursday, with Amorim explaining that the midfielder required additional recovery following international duty. However, the expectation is that Fernandes will play against Liverpool.
“The international players are ready but we need to give them more time,” Amorim said. “The guys who are returning are ready to play.”
Given Fernandes’ influence on United’s attacking play, his involvement is seen as vital. He has been one of the most reliable performers and his creativity will be essential in trying to disrupt Liverpool’s defensive shape.
Manchester United currently sit tenth in the Premier League table with three wins from seven matches. Their most recent result was a 2-0 victory over Sunderland, which provided a much-needed lift, but consistency has been difficult to find.
After their clash with Liverpool, United will host Brighton, another test of their ability to climb the table and regain momentum. Amorim will be hoping that by then, his squad has clearer news on the recovery of Martinez and Mazraoui.
The immediate challenge, however, is navigating Sunday’s trip to Anfield without two defensive options. For a manager still shaping his influence at Old Trafford, managing Man United’s injury situation could be just as important as any tactical call.
