Ruben Loftus-Cheek, born January 23, 1996 in Lewsiham, London, is going on his 11th professional season. Primarily a box-to-box midfielder, he can be employed as a wing- or even center-back as well as an attacker. At a muscular 6’3″ he can dominate physically yet retains enough poilsh to beat the defender one-on-one. Let’s look back at his career to date.

  • Chelsea (2014–2023)Loftus-Cheek rose through the esteemed Chelsea academy and made his senior debut in 2014. Despite being highly rated, he often struggled for consistent game time due to intense competition in the squad. He played a key role in Chelsea’s Europa League-winning campaign in 2018-19, scoring four goals and providing three assists, including a standout performance in the semi-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt.
  • Crystal Palace (Loan – 2017–2018)Seeking more playing time, Loftus-Cheek joined Crystal Palace on loan, where he enjoyed a breakout season. His performances earned him a spot in England’s 2018 World Cup squad, showcasing his ability to drive forward from midfield with power and grace.
  • Fulham (Loan – 2020–2021)Following a long-term Achilles injury that halted his momentum, he spent a season on loan at Fulham. While the Cottagers were relegated, Loftus-Cheek showed glimpses of his quality despite the team’s struggles.

Personal Thoughts

Loftus-Cheek is a versatile player whose adaptability is one of his greatest strengths. Sadly, his career has been marred by injury and frustrating dips in form. His time at AC Milan is a good example. In the 2023-24 season he notched 10 goals and 1 assist, but through this season only has 1 assist. Many folks still refer to him a “player with potential”, which at 29 isn’t exactly a compliment.

Despite these ups and downs he remains a dynamic and exciting player to watch, when he’s given a chance. His omission from yesterday’s Champions League line-up was disappointing. Let’s hope to see on the pitch soon!

Happy Birthday, Ruben Loftus-Cheek!
