Former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales had eggs thrown at him — reportedly by his own uncle — during the launch of his new book in Madrid on Thursday.

The 48-year-old, who was convicted of sexual assault for kissing Jenni Hermoso without consent after Spain’s 2023 Women’s World Cup win, appeared to be hit on the back as three eggs were hurled in his direction.

“I’ve found out he was my own uncle; Luis Ruben he’s called. An uncle who is my age,” Rubiales told Periodista Digital. “He threw eggs at me because he’s a deranged person, and I don’t think there’s any justification for it. They’ve arrested him, they’ve taken him away and, well, we’ll have to take action against him because I honestly thought he was armed.”

Police confirmed that one man had been detained, though they would not confirm any family connection.

Rubiales reportedly tried to chase after the man before being restrained by others at the event for his book Matar a Rubiales (“Killing Rubiales”).

Earlier this week, he told Spanish TV that he had been the target of a “far-left movement” seeking to exploit the controversy surrounding his actions toward Hermoso.

Rubiales was fined €10,800 over the incident and maintains the kiss was consensual. His lawyer has said he will appeal the conviction to Spain’s Supreme Court.
