Antonio Rüdiger caused a stir on social media after the German national team’s test match victory over the USA. The Real Madrid central defender apparently refused to sign a fan’s autograph on an FC Bayern shirt – sparking numerous reactions
In sporting terms, the evening was a success for the German national team, with national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s side beating co-hosts USA 2:1 in Chicago to bring their World Cup preparations to a successful conclusion
While Kai Havertz gave the DFB team an early lead and Leroy Sané scored the winner in the second half, Antonio Rüdiger watched the match from the bench for the entire duration
The defender was therefore not a talking point on the pitch, but only after the final whistle
During the RTL broadcast, several fans could be seen waiting for Rüdiger on the sidelines and asking him for autographs. The 33-year-old signed two shirts without any problems, but the Real professional reacted differently to a third shirt
While Rüdiger signed the other fan merchandise, he refused to sign the Bayern shirt
The scene quickly went viral on social media and sparked numerous discussions, with some users on platform X in particular reacting with incomprehension to the DFB defender’s behavior
One user wrote: „If Rüdiger can’t sign an FCB jersey in Chicago, he has to go home.“
Other fans, on the other hand, defended the central defender and pointed out that the exact background to the situation was unknown
In fact, it is not clear from the TV footage why Rüdiger refused to sign the autograph, and neither the DFB nor the player himself have yet commented on the scene
This leaves plenty of room for speculation: it is possible that there was a verbal exchange between the fan and the player beforehand that was not shown on the TV images
It is also conceivable that Rüdiger simply did not want to sign Bayern jerseys, although there is no concrete evidence of this
Some fans have already linked the action to the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and FC Bayern, in which the Whites knocked out Munich, but whether this actually played a role remains to be seen
The only fact is that the brief scene after the game received far more attention than Rüdiger’s actual role in the match against the USA
In any case, the incident is unlikely to have any major repercussions for the German national team, who are now fully focused on their upcoming World Cup opener against Curacao.
