On the eve of the Clássico against Porto, Sporting coach Rui Borges downplayed José Mourinho’s comments, stressing his focus is on Sporting and on winning. According to Glorioso 1904, he said any remarks from the Benfica coach are his concern.
Speaking at his pre-match news conference for the Liga Portugal Betclic fixture on the 21st matchday, Borges added that he will do everything to win and to understand the consequences of that.
Before Benfica’s tie with Alverca, Mourinho indicated he would prefer Porto to lose to close the gap to the summit. He framed it as a general view on the Clássico, saying it would be better if the league leaders were beaten.
After the game against the Ribatejo side, the Benfica manager restated that stance, noting it would suit Benfica if the team in first place lost and that those involved must now fight for their points.
Benfica’s next match is away to Santa Clara on 13 February, next Friday, at 18:30 at Estádio São Miguel, counting for the 22nd round of the Liga Portugal Betclic.
