Rui Costa has clarified the scope of a clause in José Mourinho’s Benfica contract, stressing it applied only to the club and the coach, while terms for outside suitors were unchanged.
According to Glorioso 1904, he used a Thursday news conference to address doubts stirred by Mourinho’s move to Real Madrid, explaining the clause was introduced during the club’s election period to provide flexibility for any incoming leadership.
Costa said the provision was mutual. If Benfica decided to dismiss Mourinho, the club would owe seven million euros, and the same sum would apply if Mourinho chose to leave.
He added that this arrangement never affected third parties. Any club wishing to hire Mourinho would still have to activate the 15 million euros release, even within the 10-day window he referenced.
The Benfica president underlined that there were no special exceptions that could ease a switch to another club beyond that established release figure.
