Rui Costa defends Prestianni after racism claim involving Vini Jr | OneFootball

On Tuesday 24, Benfica president Rui Costa defended Argentine winger Prestianni, saying nothing has been proven over the racism accusation involving Vinicius Júnior. He insisted the club trust their player.

According to Coluna Do Fla, the flashpoint came when Real Madrid faced Benfica on Tuesday 17. After Vinicius Júnior scored, he accused Prestianni of racism, the referee halted play and initiated the anti-racism protocol.

The incident drew worldwide attention, with figures across football showing support for Vinicius Júnior. UEFA has suspended Prestianni indefinitely while the case is investigated.

Rui Costa said he was not on the pitch and would rely on the club’s knowledge of their player, describing Prestianni as anything but racist. He added that Benfica informed supporters of procedures, defended the player when required and waited for due process because the case remains ongoing and only a provisional suspension exists.

Real Madrid, with Vinicius Júnior, meet Benfica, with Prestianni, on Wednesday 25 at the Santiago Bernabéu for the second match of the playoffs. Madrid won the first leg 1-0.
