Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge spoke of his disappointment in being unable to sign Liverpool's Florian Wirtz who he believes 'would be better off' at the Bundesliga champions.

Speaking with German outlet Welt in a wide-ranging interview, Rummenigge was asked about this summer's transfer business with Bayern being linked with both Wirtz and also Nick Woltemade with both players instead making a switch to the Premier League with Liverpool and Newcastle United respectively.

"I have to be honest, in the case of Florian Wirtz I'm still sorry because I think the player would be better off at Bayern Munich than at Liverpool FC," the 69-year-old, who will turn 70 tomorrow, said.

"We could have gotten Woltemade. But I also have to say: FC Bayern is well advised not to go along with every financial madness. I have always said: We want to be successful in sport, but please be seriously and solidly financed. We have a top team. Again this year. And if the three who are currently injured come back soon, then we have a great team."

Rummenigge also spoke about his time in charge of the club and overseeing new head coaches coming into the team with special praise for Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola who had their teams 'at such a high level, that you never had to worry about anything.'

The former West Germany international also spoke about his hardest coaching dismissal, when Bayern sacked Carlo Ancelotti in 2017.

"Carlo was a very, very good coach in the first year, we won the championship early in 2017. When we had to dismiss him early in the fall after the 3-0 [defeat] in Paris, it was the worst dismissal I had ever had to give a coach. I have to honestly say that tears came to my eyes back then. He said to me: 'You are no longer my boss, but you remain my friend'."
