According to Sainstmarching.com, Leicester are closing in on the free signing of Alex McCarthy after his Southampton exit, while Danny Ings is close to joining Russell Martin’s ranks in the Midlands.

The two clubs have swapped personnel in recent years, with Jannick Vestergaard and Ryan Bertrand representing both. Vestergaard is set to rip up his contract as the Foxes ply their trade in League One next season, and Joe Aribo spent last campaign on Leicester’s books.

McCarthy was among the Saints players not offered new terms this summer. The 36-year-old made only seven Championship appearances last term, keeping one clean sheet, so a parting felt inevitable.

Martin worked with McCarthy at St Mary’s, so the fit appears logical. The one-time England international will hope to revive a stale career in League One.

Whether he thrives is unclear. Across the last four seasons he has managed only 26 league outings and has not been an undisputed number one on the South Coast.

Even so, his track record is sizeable, with 84 career clean sheets across the Premier League, Championship and League One. That includes 35 in the EFL and 12 for Yeovil Town in 2009/10, a campaign that propelled him to the top flight.
