Former Manchester United interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is reportedly the favoured option for the Coventry City job.

Van Nistelrooy returned to United in the summer as part of INEOS’ coaching reshuffle.

Following Erik ten Hag’s sacking late last month, the former Red stepped up in a caretaker capacity, in an effort to try and steady the ship before Ruben Amorim’s official arrival.

United went unbeaten in the four games Van Nistelrooy took charge of. However, despite this, the club confirmed the Dutchman’s departure on Monday.

Since then, he has been linked to the Burnley and Coventry managerial roles.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Van Nistelrooy had submitted his application for the Coventry job.

The Championship outfit, who made the last four of the FA Cup last season, recently parted ways with Mark Robins. The Sky Blues are currently languishing in 17th in the second tier and have chosen to make a change in the dugout.

Alongside Van Nistelrooy, the other candidate in the running for the Coventry job is Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

Sam Cohen has now given an update on the situation. Cohen wrote on X, ” Understand there are two candidates currently in contention for the Coventry manager role: Frank Lampard and Ruud van Nistelrooy.”

“Ruud is the preferred choice of most involved parties, but the owner is leaning toward Lampard due to their close ties with the Redknapp family.”

“Ruud is willing to accept the role as head coach without additional conditions, whereas Lampard is seeking influence over transfers as part of his appointment.”

“This has created a complex and uncertain situation as discussions continue.”

Earlier this week, Coventry owner Doug King remarked [via talkSPORT], “We’ve received a huge amount of CVs from high-quality people, of which Frank is one.”

“We’ve done nothing on that process…but clearly we’re in the international break, we’ll be assessing everything. We’ll work out who’s going to make the shortlist and we’ll go from there.”

Meanwhile, United are back in action next weekend when they travel to Portman Road to take on Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town.
