Ryan Reynolds watched Canada’s World Cup opener in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina, celebrating Cyle Larin’s equaliser that earned his country a first World Cup point. The wider focus on celebrity fans has meanwhile drawn criticism from a BBC presenter.

“If you’re just reading the headlines, you probably think, ‘Oh, this show is going to be funny.’ It’s gonna be a fish-out-of-water story about two schmucky showbiz morons going in, falling on their a****, learning as they go. But the show literally does not centre us. It centres the town,” he told Variety in 2023. “I’m fed up of cutaways to famous people in the crowd,” said BBC Sport presenter Mark Chapman on The Sports Agent podcast.

Reynolds teamed up with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob Mac to buy Wrexham in November 2020, with Welcome to Wrexham helping propel the club’s rise from the National League to the Championship. The fifth season is rolling out and the series has been renewed until 2029, spotlighting players, fans and staff.

On social media he said he would not miss Canada’s match, that the dash to reach Toronto was worth it, and he called the occasion one of the sport’s great atmospheres. He also praised the home support and expressed pride in the team.

“We do it in this country as well, and it winds me up,” Chapman added. He also pointed to repeated shots of famous faces at recent games.

Pictures during broadcasts are supplied by the host broadcaster, not by the BBC or ITV.
