Sunday was a memorable day for the Egypt national team as they claimed their first-ever victory in World Cups. Much of that was down to the performance of Mohamed Salah, who also reached a major personal milestone by scoring in a 3-1 win over New Zealand: the 400th goal of his career.
At 34 and very likely appearing at his final World Cup, Salah is still showing he can make the difference. He scored once and provided an assist in Egypt’s historic victory – his 68th goal for the national team in 118 matches.
The Egyptian shirt is the second jersey for which Salah has scored the most goals. The first, of course, is Liverpool’s, where he established himself as one of the biggest names of his generation, scoring 257 goals for the Reds in 442 appearances.
Salah’s tally of 400 also includes 10 goals for El Mokawloon in Egypt; 20 for Basel in Switzerland; 2 for Chelsea in England; and 9 for Fiorentina and 34 for Roma in Italian football.
After the World Cup, Salah will keep scoring goals, but very likely far from Liverpool. The forward has spoken in a farewell tone throughout the last six months, although he still has one more season left on his contract with the Reds and has not yet indicated what the next step in his career will be.
