Norwich City are close to securing a permanent deal for Sam Field, following a solid loan spell at Carrow Road last season

Norwich City are looking to continue their summer transfer business with the return of former loanee Sam Field.

The Canaries announced their first signing of the summer on Thursday, bringing in Brazil under-20 international Bruno Alves from Cruzeiro on an initial loan deal with a view to making the move permanent next summer.

The defender will likely take some time to be bedded into the senior squad at Carrow Road, so the news surrounding a permanent deal for Field will likely get Norwich fans a little more excited about their Championship hopes next season.

The 28-year-old arrived at the club in January from fellow second-tier outfit QPR, and played a part in what was a very strong second half of the campaign, starting seven times out of his 13 total league appearances during the short-term spell.

But, it seems that his time at Carrow Road didn't do much to persuade the Hoops to integrate him back into first-team affairs this summer, and his five-and-a-half-year stint at Loftus Road looks set to come to an end permanently this summer.

Pete O'Rourke has revealed that Norwich are set to part ways with up to £3 million to bring Field to the club permanently this summer.

The 28-year-old has made well over 200 Championship appearances and will provide key depth throughout what is expected to be an important campaign at Carrow Road next season.

With the number of injuries that the Canaries suffered last season, it'll be important for Philippe Clement to bulk out his squad this summer, just in case a similar crisis is bestowed upon them next year.

The fee will rise to £3 million, too, and it is unknown how much of that overall price tag will be down to appearances and whether Norwich gets promoted. In the end, it may not cost as much if certain bonuses aren't met.

With Field able to operate in the engine room and as part of the defensive line, he'll be a useful addition to Philippe Clement's side full-time - one that the Belgian boss feels is worth a decent seven-figure fee.

How do QPR fans feel about selling Sam Field for £3 million?

There's no understating the importance that a good squad player with plenty of appearances in the Championship can have on a side looking to push towards promotion, but a £3 million fee, to some, may be a little excessive.

With Field deemed not good enough to get into the QPR squad last season under Julien Stephan, many Hoops fans were expecting him to move on permanently for a nominal fee, while they focused their attention on developing Nicolas Madsen and Jonathan Varane.

Therefore, the fact that they could receive £3 million for his services, understandably, has R's fans very happy.

"Might be the biggest robbery this world's ever seen," said one QPR fan in response to the news. "If that figure is true, then that is an incredible bit of business," another said.

"No complaints, especially if this fee is true!" was also among the replies, as well as various gifs of people holding money stacks and smiling with them in hand.

"THREE??? Christian [Nourry, QPR CEO], take a little out of that for yourself and buy the wife something," and "CEO strikes again and generates us vital funds," were said by QPR fans, too. Evidently, they believe it to be a brilliant bit of business from their board.

After a 2025/26 campaign which saw QPR part ways with £4.5 million for Ronnie Edwards, £2.7 million for Koki Saito and an initial £2.75 million for Richard Kone, which could rise to £5 million, plus other decent seven-figure fees for incoming players, there was some worry that the Hoops would need to recoup some money from one of their starting, saleable assets.

If they can recoup £3 million for Field, who wasn't in their plans, then it increases the chances of keeping the core group together ahead of next season, which betters their chances at making a push towards promotion.

Clearly, it's a move that is more than popular with those in the terraces at Loftus Road.
