The Tractor Boys were tipped as title favourites by many ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign, due to the sheer volume of quality players that can be found in their squad.

Attackers such as Chuba Akpom, Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene provide a constant threat for defences up and down the second-tier, with all three proving to be some of the EFL’s most talented operators in the past.

In the middle of the park, talent along the lines of Jens Cajuste, Marcelino Nunez and Azor Matusiwa should, on paper, dominate most games, supported by a backline full of some of the Championship’s toughest defensive minds.

However, Kieran McKenna’s side have struggled during the early parts of this season.

The Suffolk outfit have drawn against Birmingham City, Southampton and Derby County, alongside suffering defeat at the hands of Preston North End.

A 5-0 triumph over Sheffield United looked to be a turning point in their season, but Ipswich then came within 10 minutes of losing in Lancashire again, this time versus Blackburn Rovers.

That match was ultimately abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch, and the outcome of the match is still to be determined.

Ultimately, something seems to be missing from the Tractor Boys’ squad, and it could be the leadership of Morsy.

Sam Morsy struck with fate he didn’t suffer once with Ipswich Town

Morsy exited Portman Road this summer to join Kuwait SC after four years in Suffolk, a time period which saw him captain Ipswich from League One to the top-flight.

It could be argued that the Tractor Boys are missing his presence in the dressing room, but recent events have shown that things aren’t going plain sailing for the 34-year-old in his new venture.

In just his third match for Kuwait SC, Morsy was handed a straight red card after 31 minutes against Al-Arabi.

His new side were leading 1-0 at this point in the fixture but ultimately had to settle for a draw after playing an hour with only 10 men.

Remarkably, during his entire time at Ipswich Town, Morsy wasn’t dismissed on a single occasion.

Given his uncompromising, tough-tackling and combative nature, it is extremely surprising that the 34-year-old didn’t see one red card throughout his stint at Portman Road.

Morsy controversially avoided a sending off against Aston Villa last term in the Premier League, with it suggested that a tough tackle on Jaden Philogene was worthy of a second bookable offence.

However, he didn’t get sent off and maintained his remarkably clean record, which allowed him to feature consistently for Ipswich during his four seasons with the club.

Both Ipswich Town and Sam Morsy will look to bounce back from tough starts to the season

Given how much quality Ipswich Town possesses, it seems almost inevitable that they will fully click into gear at some point and make a charge up the Championship standings.

However, the longer they take to find their feet, the more they risk letting other teams gain a huge, potentially unassailable advantage over them.

Middlesbrough have picked up 16 points from their first six matches and already hold an advantage of 10 points over the Tractor Boys.

This is far from impossible to catch across 40 more games, but McKenna and Co. won’t want that gap to increase much further.

Fellow relegated side Leicester City have made a better start than Ipswich too, which is another area of concern.

Morsy, on the other hand, will hope not to repeat getting sent off again during his maiden season with Kuwait SC.

They currently sit top of the Kuwait Premier League, and will hope to add a record 21st title to their trophy room come the end of the season.
