After it’s all settled, Rangers are already two points behind Celtic following matchday one and Rangers trail Celtic already.

For a long time, there was a distinct belief our eastern chums were to be held by St Mirren and drop points themselves, but a late winner put paid to that.

Rangers now trail, and frankly the league position is depressingly accurate.

This summer has seen a ramshackle transfer window of lower EFL fodder arriving at high price in Govan, with League One sides laughing all the way to the bank.

Even Premier League Bournemouth joyfully took the £600,000 they got for Joe Rothwell.

Rangers look nothing like a championship-contending side. Russell Martin tippy-tappy playing at the back with a lack of urgency is exactly what Southampton warned us about. It’s ‘nowhere football’, and is a watered-down and even worse iteration of the rubbish Bread Man had us doing in the Premiership.

And Motherwell lapped it up – pouncing to get a point and the one thing we agree with Martin on is the visitors were lucky to get that at Fir Park.

Unfortunately, these days, a winning Rangers is a distant memory – the halcyon days of Walter, Eck, Dick and others is long gone. Instead we have EFL guff infesting the club and trying its ‘progressive’ garbage, rather than back-to-basics like Walter knew.

We harp on about Walter so much, but he made it so simple. Build from the back, have a solid rearguard and ensure a spine. It’s not rocket science but not one manager since him has gone for that. And we include Gerrard here.

These days it’s slight and medium players who mostly lack pace or any real power, or height. The SPL keeps tearing them apart..

We just don’t learn. And once again, we find ourselves chasing the game in the opening match of the season..

Another long campaign awaits because Celtic kept a clean sheet and took their chance. Rangers were too busy trying to force Max Aarons to be a left back. Rangers trail Celtic already

Nothing changes if nothing changes.
