Samir Nasri is contesting a 5.5 million euros claim from the French tax authorities, with discussions ongoing, his lawyers told AFP.
On 31 March, Les Échos reported that the tax administration had carried out a protective seizure on his accounts and a property, and had opened proceedings over 5.25 million euros of income tax for 2020-2022 and 82,000 euros of wealth tax for 2019-2025.
Nasri’s counsel argue the supposed debt stems from a misreading that treated bank credits as undeclared income. They say they are responding to a proposed adjustment and that the case has not yet reached the litigation stage.
The legal team have challenged that measure before an enforcement judge, then appealed after the confirmation. A fresh ruling could arrive by autumn, while the broader dispute may run on for years.
They also contest evidence cited on residency, saying 212 takeaway deliveries cannot prove he lived in France rather than the United Arab Emirates. Some orders, they add, were placed by his mother, with whom he shares the account.
The lawyers maintain he lives in Dubai with his partner and son, travelling to France mainly for Canal+ Champions League broadcasts and for well under half the year. They say he has declared foreign earnings as a non-resident since 2008, with Canal+ income taxed in France through a local company.
Lawyer Julien Riahi added that Nasri’s presence in the United Arab Emirates reflected Manchester City’s Emirati backing during his longest spell as a player, not an attempt to flee French taxes like some influencers.
