Ryan Mason could be in line for a surprise return to management, with Sampdoria reported to be moving for the ex-West Brom boss as their frontrunner for the job, five months after his Hawthorns sacking, according to La Repubblica.
The former Tottenham midfielder began his managerial career at Albion last summer. He started brightly, taking them top after a superb early run, before results tailed off.
Mason lasted 27 games as the Baggies slid into the bottom half. A poor away sequence ended with a last-gasp defeat at Leicester, after which he was sacked.
He has since been loosely linked with the vacancy at Watford. Sampdoria, once a major Serie A force, are now in the second tier and finished 13th.
It is said the club’s CEO, Jesper Fredburg, is driving the push, influenced by his time at Anderlecht, a club with which Mason was previously linked during his Tottenham days. Their interest has also been linked to fellow second-tier club Cesena appointing former England player Ashley Cole.
