San Lorenzo appoint Gustavo Álvarez ahead of Santos ties | OneFootball

According to Diario Do Peixe, San Lorenzo have appointed Gustavo Álvarez as head coach, replacing Damián Ayude after the 5-2 loss to Defensa Y Justicia on 16 March.

The 53-year-old Argentine arrives with a strong South American résumé. He won the 2023 Chilean Primera División with Huachipato, which secured a Copa Libertadores berth, then enjoyed success at Universidad de Chile with the 2024 Copa Chile and 2025 Supercopa Chilena, also reaching the 2025 Copa Sul-Americana semi-finals.

Santos and San Lorenzo share a Copa Sul-Americana group. They meet first in Argentina on 28 April, then at Vila Belmiro on 20 May.

The group also includes Deportivo Cuenca of Ecuador and Recoleta of Paraguay. Only the group winners advance directly to the second phase, the runners-up enter a play-off against a Copa Libertadores third-placed side.

Santos visit Deportivo Cuenca on 8 April, host Recoleta on 14 April, travel to San Lorenzo on 28 April, visit Recoleta on 5 May, host San Lorenzo on 20 May, and finish against Deportivo Cuenca on 26 May.
