UEFA has appointed Sandro Schärer to take charge of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Bayern Munich on Tuesday at 21:00.
The Parisians already know the Swiss official, he oversaw their 4-0 win over Atalanta earlier this season, the European champions’ opening game of the Champions League league phase.
Schärer came under the spotlight in France in March 2025 when he refereed Lille against Borussia Dortmund in the last 16. After Lille’s elimination in the second leg, president Olivier Létang, frustrated by the exit, questioned the referee’s impartiality. The tie finished 1-1 and 1-2.
Létang said he found it unusual that Schärer was Swiss-German and noted that at half-time he spoke exclusively in German with Dortmund’s players. That match featured a disputed Dortmund penalty in the 54th minute.
Despite those suspicions, UEFA did not open a disciplinary case against Létang.
