Manchester United’s pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali may have taken a complicated turn. The Red Devils have been in sizzling form of late, picking up seven wins in their last 10 Premier League games.

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick’s arrival has seen the English giants abandon former head coach Ruben Amorim’s controversial 3-4-3 system that had no room for Kobbie Mainoo. Carrick has set up United in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Casemiro and Mainoo forging a stunning partnership in the middle of the park and Bruno Fernandes operating as the No. 10.

That midfield has powered the Red Devils to third in the Premier League table after 31 games. However, the Brazilian is all set to leave Old Trafford once his contract expires at the end of this season, forcing United to turn to the market for solutions.

The English giants are eyeing several top midfielders from the Premier League as well as abroad as they look to fill Casemiro’s shoes. Recent reports have suggested that Tonali is also on their wish list for the job.

Tonali’s rise in the Premier League

Tonali arrived at St James’ Park from AC Milan in the summer of 2023, but his debut season was soon derailed by a betting fiasco. The Italian was subsequently banned from football for 10 months before returning to action in August 2024.

Since then, Tonali has been a pillar in the middle of the park for the Magpies and has helped them win the EFL Cup last season. The 25 year old has continued his good form this campaign, registering three goals and seven assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.

Tonali’s style of play and his Premier League experience make him a fine option to replace Casemiro at the Theatre of Dreams. However, it now appears that United could face competition from LaLiga in the race.

Real offered chance to sign Tonali

Real Madrid have been informed about Sandro Tonali’s availability this summer, according to TEAMtalk. The report states: “Sandro Tonali’s representatives are stepping up their efforts to secure a summer move, with contact now made with Real Madrid as part of a widening search for his next destination, while Manchester City and other top sides continue to push for his signature.”

Tonali is not pushing for an exit, but reportedly remains open to a new adventure this summer, with Newcastle’s possible absence from next season’s Champions League adding further intrigue to the saga. The player’s entourage has already contacted several clubs across the continent to keep their options open, with United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea also hot on his heels.

The report adds that Real Madrid have included Tonali in their transfer wish list, stating: “We can reveal that Real Madrid are among the clubs now informed of Tonali’s availability, with the Spanish champions understood to be in the market for at least one new midfielder this summer, and potentially two.”

“The LaLiga giants have been prioritising a move for Rodri, while also monitoring Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister. Tonali has now been added to that shortlist as they assess multiple options to strengthen their midfield.”

Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are reportedly in the race as well, but a return to Serie A is not feasible due to financial constraints.

Final Thoughts

Real Madrid’s pursuit of Tonali will certainly be a cause for concern for the Old Trafford hierarchy. With the race for the Italian’s signature heating up, United must lay down the groundwork if they wish to beat the competition.
