Santos chases Weverton’s record as Athletico meet Grêmio | OneFootball

Santos and Weverton, Athletico idols in goal across generations, meet on opposite sides on Saturday at 20:30 at Arena da Baixada in the 14th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. According to Globo.com, Weverton leads the club’s goalkeeping appearances with 318, and Santos will reach 311 this weekend as he closes in.

Now with Grêmio, Weverton made his name at Athletico from 2012 to 2017. He arrived after impressing for Portuguesa, then lifted the 2016 Campeonato Paranaense to end a seven-year wait for silverware and spark a winning era. It was also the period in which his successor emerged.

Santos came through the CT do Caju academy and debuted in 2011. He was Weverton’s team-mate and rival before taking the gloves in 2018 when Weverton left for Palmeiras, beginning a legacy of his own.

The pair are linked by Olympic gold with Brazil while on Athletico’s books. In 2016, Weverton was decisive in Rio, saving a penalty in the final against Germany before Neymar converted the clincher at the Maracanã.

In 2021 in Tokyo, Santos kept goal as Brazil won a second Olympic gold, with the final against Spain settled in added time.

A nod to those gold medals appears on Athletico’s goalkeeper shirt this season, a tribute to the club’s emblematic keepers.
