Santos’ Deliberative Council began voting on a new club statute on Monday after a night of protests, with only five articles addressed and the process set to continue on Thursday.
According to Diario Do Peixe, organised supporter groups gathered outside Vila Belmiro before the session, setting off fireworks as Military Police intervened, and similar scenes followed the meeting. Chants targeted president Marcelo Teixeira and his son, including obscene language.
The session started late amid a row between Celso Pires, chair of the Statute Commission, and several councillors.
Among the items handled, the main focus was a possible conversion to a SAF. The commission’s initial plan to allow the sale of up to 90% of shares was rejected, with councillors approving an amendment that keeps the club holding 20% and permits a sale of up to 80%.
Other contentious points, including the qualifying period for members to gain voting rights and the number of council terms required for presidential hopefuls, were not discussed. Articles are being decided individually by the council, after which members will vote on the complete text in an assembly rather than article by article.
