Santos against Chapecoense at Vila Belmiro on Saturday 25 at 18:30 will debut semi-automated offside technology in the Brasileirão. The round also opens with Athletico-PR v Internacional at the Arena da Baixada, and all matches will use SAOT.
According to Diario Do Peixe, Santos’ 1-0 win over América-MG in the Brasileiro Sub-17 on Tuesday 14 served as the final approval test at Vila Belmiro. With SAOT cleared, this will be the first match at the ground using the system.
All 19 Série A stadiums and Arena Barueri have been equipped. Each venue carries 28 to 32 dedicated cameras and five local servers, with images sent in real time to the CBF VAR Operations Centre in Rio de Janeiro.
The centre has 10 integrated control rooms running VAR and SAOT. The rollout involved inspections, installations, engineering reviews and extensive tests across the league venues.
Referees, VAR officials and technical staff received training, with trials conducted in official matches and simulated scenarios before the competition debut.
Powered by GeniusIQ, SAOT processes billions of data points to flag potential offsides, select relevant attackers and defenders, and pinpoint the moment of the pass. It delivers a 3D visualisation within seconds, combined with player-tracking to refine offside and handball analysis.
