Santos president justifies appointment of Cuca after 2-1 loss to Internacional | OneFootball

Santos president Marcelo Teixeira has explained the decision to appoint Cuca as head coach on a deal to the end of 2026, following the 2-1 defeat to Internacional in the Brasileirão that led to Juan Pablo Vojvoda’s dismissal.

Speaking in Paraguay before the Copa Sudamericana and Conmebol Libertadores group draws, Teixeira pointed to Cuca’s history with the club as a player in the 1990s and later as coach for their most recent Libertadores final. According to Globo.com, he said familiarity with Santos was decisive.

He added the club chose not to explore the wider market, moving quickly because of Cuca’s identity with Santos and their existing relationship. Part of the incoming backroom team visited the club on Thursday.

Teixeira expressed regret at ending Vojvoda’s tenure, a call he reached en route to the airport after watching part of the match at Vila Belmiro. He noted Vojvoda met last season’s targets, keeping Santos in Serie A, reaching the Sudamericana and promoting academy players, but felt the team never quite clicked.

Cuca will be presented at Vila Belmiro on Friday at 19:00 Brasília time. His debut is scheduled for Sunday at 16:00 away to Cruzeiro at Mineirão in the Brasileirão.
