Vasco da Gama are advancing plans to fund the São Januário revamp by splitting the sale of 220,000 square metres of construction rights, and are also preparing the pitch for Botafogo in early April.
Beyond the well-known Marapendi plot, the club is assessing additional sites in Barra da Tijuca to place portions with multiple developers rather than a single buyer. “I think there is a good chance it happens this year,” said vice-president general Renato Brito, speaking to Atenção Vascaínos!.
Confidence has been buoyed by Rio’s new mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, who attended FutSummit in the west of the city and signalled political willingness to help local clubs.
With the stadium redesign already complete in-house, the board’s immediate task is the administrative sale of those rights. The surface will undergo intensive preparation to host the clássico with Botafogo in early April, using the national pause to recover after heavy rain against Palmeiras and intense heat versus Grêmio.
Only the top layer of turf has been replaced, the base will not be renewed until reconstruction begins. Despite that, players under coach Renato Gaúcho have been pleased with the treatment, the report added, while noting that external criticism came only from Palmeiras assistant João Martins.
