According to Globo.com, São Paulo Court of Justice judge Débora Vanessa Caús Brandão on Tuesday suspended the election for president of the Federação Paulista de Futebol, which had been set for the 25th.

The case was brought by Liga Mauaense de Futebol, alleging irregularities in the FPF statute approved last year. Among the points raised is a cap of up to five presidential terms, said to conflict with the statutes of CBF, Conmebol and Fifa, as well as the Lei Geral do Esporte.

The request had been rejected at first instance, but that decision has now been overturned. The ruling gives the FPF and Reinaldo Carneiro Bastos 15 days to respond.

Reinaldo Carneiro Bastos, FPF president since 2015, was the only candidate to register a slate for this year’s vote. The statute requires backing from 12 clubs, including five from A-1, three from A-2, two from A-3, one from the Second Division and one amateur league.

Lawyer Wilson Marquetti, a former prosecutor at São Paulo’s sports justice tribunal, sought to run as an opponent but failed to secure the necessary endorsements. The FPF intends to appeal, seeking to have the will of all eligible clubs and leagues respected.
