A São Paulo court has voided the official record of the Corinthians conselho meeting that provisionally removed Romeu Tuma Júnior from the presidency on 23 March. The ruling sets aside the minutes lodged on 13 April.
According to Meu Timao, judge Luciana Carone Nucci Eugênio Mahuad, of the first Public Registers Court of the Central Civil Forum in São Paulo, upheld Tuma’s challenge to the vote’s legality and ordered the registry entry nullified. The court also rejected a filing from the first registry office concerning the meeting.
The judge identified a procedural flaw, noting that under Corinthians’ statute only the Conselho Deliberativo president could convene an extraordinary session, then Tuma, even if requested by board president Osmar Stabile. She said the registry should have checked the convocation and the meeting table against the statute and internal rules.
On the day, Maria Ângela Ocampos, then first secretary, led proceedings in Tuma’s absence for health reasons alongside Stabile, second secretary Denis Piovesan, and Conselho de Orientação, Cori, chair Miguel Marques e Silva. Ocampos deemed the gathering irregular, yet a notarial act was recorded by Beatriz Mollica de Carvalho.
After Ocampos left, Piovesan continued the session at Parque São Jorge in line with the council’s internal rules.
Councillors voted 115 to 15 to remove Tuma in a nominal ballot using papers, starting with life members then triennials. Despite that decision, he stayed in post until taking leave amid discussions over reform of the club statute.
