Sarri ‘to take’ Atalanta job, Napoli return seen too heavy a burden | OneFootball

Maurizio Sarri has opted for Atalanta ahead of a Napoli reunion, despite being Aurelio De Laurentiis’s preferred successor to Antonio Conte.

Il Mattino reports that the weight of his legacy in Naples proved decisive, with a return to the Maradona judged too emotionally fraught.

Across those three seasons between 2015 and 2018, he built one of Europe’s most admired sides, and the report said it was better not to spoil those memories.

Sarri will reportedly take charge in Bergamo, replacing Raffaele Palladino.

Incoming sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is understood to have been pivotal, with their relationship from their Napoli days seen as decisive. Giuntoli worked with Sarri during his reign in Campania.

Back in Rome, Gennaro Gattuso is set to be named as Sarri’s successor at Lazio.
