Ismael Koné has suffered a serious injury at the 2026 World Cup, prompting Sassuolo to search for midfield cover ahead of the new season. He will miss several months, including pre-season and much of 2026-27.
According to Football Italia, Fiorentina’s Marco Brescianini is among the options under consideration as the Emilia-Romagna club assess replacements.
Koné was injured during Canada’s 4-0 group-stage win over Qatar in June. Juventus and Canada forward Jonathan David said the midfielder means everything to the group and is hugely admired.
Coach Jesse Marsch described Koné as a great, imperfect talent who can produce unique moments but sometimes switches off, calling the loss significant. He added that Canada will ensure he receives the best care and that Koné remains central to their future.
Koné, 24, scored six goals in 35 Serie A appearances in his first season in Italy. Brescianini spent the first half of 2025-26 at Atalanta before joining Fiorentina on loan in January, a move made permanent after survival, and La Viola are thought to be open to offers this summer.
Sassuolo secured comfortable survival in 2025-26 under Fabio Grosso, who has since taken over at Fiorentina. The Neroverdi have appointed former Fiorentina midfielder Alberto Aquilani, who steps into Serie A management for the first time. Long-serving CEO Giovanni Carnevali has also departed after 12 years, joining Juventus to replace Damien Comolli as CEO and general manager.
