How Saudi Arabia Qualified

Saudi Arabia’s path through the grueling Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifiers was quite exhausting.

They entered qualification in the second round and were drawn into a group alongside Jordan, Tajikistan, and Pakistan. On paper, Saudi Arabia was expected to walk the group since none of the other teams in the group had ever qualified for a World Cup.

Instead, Jordan shocked the region by finishing first and securing automatic progression, forcing Saudi Arabia into second place and into the third round.

There, they found themselves in a group with Japan, Australia, Indonesia, China, and Bahrain. A top-two finish would have guaranteed direct qualification. However, Saudi Arabia could only manage third place, meaning they were forced into a fourth qualifying round.

Thankfully, this time they got the job done.

Saudi Arabia topped a group containing Iraq and Indonesia, finally securing their ticket to the World Cup. Not the most dominant campaign, but it got the job done.

Salem Al-Dawsari

The national hero of the Green Falcons. For years, Salem Al-Dawsari has been an iconic presence for both Al Hilal and the national team.
