SC Freiburg vs. FC Salzburg Europa League preview: Team news and predicted lineups

Freiburg entertain Salzburg in the sixth matchday of UEFA Europa League. Julian Schuster’s side failed to maintain their lead in back-to-back league games away from home, but they are still unbeaten in Europe.

They could’ve topped the table had they beat Viktoria Plzeň on matchday five, but the goalless draw with a fellow undefeated side put them within a single point of the top three teams.

With a tricky fixture in the final matchday away at Lille awaiting them, Freiburg will hope to secure qualification for the knockout stages earlier in the league phase. Their solid defense would be vital in that search as they only conceded three goals so far in the Europa League.

Including their last four home games in the 2023/24 campaign, Freiburg won each of the last six European duels at Europa-Park Stadion. They’re also unbeaten at home in Bundesliga since the opening matchday defeat to Sandro Wagner’s FC Augsburg.

Max Rosenfelder joined Freiburg’s injury list after the game in Heidenheim, while further tests will determine the availability of Philipp Lienhart as he also sustained a groin injury during his 200th appearance for the club. Jordy Makengo and Eren Dinkci will most likely need more time before a return to full fitness.

Johan Manzambi will hope to extend his scoring streak on Thursday. The Swiss midfielder scored his first Europa League goal in a 3-1 win in Nice before finding the net in the last three Bundesliga encounters. However, Heidenheim stunned the Breisgau Brazilians on Saturday with a 94th minute winner.

Salzburg ended a three-game winless spell in the league with a 2-0 victory over bottom-placed FC Blau-Weiss Linz on Saturday. Ex-Bochum coach Thomas Letsch has been in charge of the club since the start of 2025.
