Schalke sign Maximilian Wöber on free after Leeds exit | OneFootball

Schalke have signed Maximilian Wöber on a free transfer after the defender ended his Leeds United contract, the club confirmed.

The 28-year-old joins the Royal Blues. Director of professional football Youri Mulder said Wöber brings more than 170 top-flight games and knows the Bundesliga from spells at Mönchengladbach and Bremen.

Mulder added the staff, working with Miron Muslic, are convinced he can rediscover his best and that his attributes provide flexibility in different defensive set-ups.

Wöber arrives after an injury-hit 2025/26 loan at Werder Bremen.

He said Schalke appealed from the outset following positive talks and called it a special club whose promotion was deserved.

Wöber described playing in the Bundesliga for Schalke as an exciting challenge and said he wants to settle quickly and meet his new team-mates.
