Bosnia and Herzegovina's dramatic victory over Italy which sealed their place at the 2026 World Cup may have come at a price for FC Schalke 04.

Just moments before the penalty shootout began – which Bosnia would win 4-1 – Edin Džeko was roughly tackled by Davide Frattesi.

The Schalke striker received treatment for several minutes, and was ultimately unable to participate in the penalty shootout.

The 40-year-old clutched his right shoulder, winced in pain and his arm was immediately strapped up with a makeshift bandage.

A potentially lengthy absence of Džeko would be a very bitter blow for the Royal Blues, especially in the midst of their promotion bid.

With the extent of the veteran marksman's injury unknown, Schalke will be hoping that the next assessment will be a positive one.
