Scott McTominay opened the scoring inside the third minute with a superb overhead kick from Ben Gannon-Doak’s cross.
Denmark grew into the game and started dominating possession.
Rasmus Hojlund thought he had restored parity for the visitors at the far post, but his effort was ruled out for a foul he committed in the build-up.
He missed a golden chance just before the half-hour mark, heading the ball over from six yards, but was later deemed offside.
Despite the visitors’ dominance, Scotland held on to their one-goal lead until the break. Denmark continued to push for the equaliser in the second half.
Goalkeeper Craig Gordon made a superb save to deny Hojlund, but he could do nothing to prevent him from levelling the scores from the penalty spot before the hour mark.
Denmark were reduced to ten men after Rasmus Kristensen received a yellow card for a second bookable offence.
Substitute Lawrence Shankland restored Scotland’s lead, outmuscling goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to turn the ball home.
Their lead only lasted for three minutes, as Patrick Dorgu restored parity for the visitors with a simple finish into the bottom corner.
Scotland refused to be denied, and two late goals sealed a historic victory.
Celtic defender Kieran Tierney put Scotland back in front before Kenny McLean capped off a memorable night with a decisive strike.
