Leeds United Under-21s put in an impressive display in the capital to earn a well-deserved draw against Chelsea Under-21s.

A thunderous volley from Max McFadden had put Scott Gardner’s side into the lead, though the hosts hit back late on to deny the Whites all three points in the Premier League 2.

Speaking after the match, Gardner was full of credit for how his team performed, especially after what has been a very busy period for his players.

“I think we are actually disappointed after how we started the game that we didn’t win the match,” the United boss explained.

“So, I think that shows the belief that we have in the squad and where we are at that we can come away here and be disappointed with a point.

“We know the character of the group. You look at the players that finished the game. Some of them played three days ago in the FA Youth Cup.

“It has been a big shift for a lot of these lads this week. I thought the defending was excellent, barring one moment.

“The goal was a great finish. We know Max is capable of it. He has obviously been out for a while, so I am pleased for him to get the goal.

“He ended up playing more of the game than maybe we had planned, but a number of lads there have got some good minutes again.

“I thought in the game against Man City on Tuesday night, the amount of time they were down to 10, I actually thought they did well. So again, it just shows the quality we have to go against strong opposition and do well.

“We have a week until Derby, we need to rest up and then we go again.”
