The final Old Firm clash of the season between Celtic and Rangers takes place at Parkhead on Sunday.
Following Hearts’ victory over Rangers at the start of the week, the Ibrox side are now surely out of contention for a 56th league title.
Danny Rohl’s men could still have a key role to play, especially should they secure all three points on Sunday afternoon.
Celtic are playing for the Championship, while Rangers have pride at stake. Who wins?
It may have been 22 years since the wily veteran led Celtic to the Scottish league title, but it appears as though he is keen to add to his three championships this term.
The Parkhead outfit heads into this clash on the back of five consecutive victories in all competitions. As such, Celtic are strong favourites to prevail in this intriguing Old Firm clash.
Despite the success in recent years, remarkably, Celtic have not won against Rangers in 90 minutes since September 2024, a run that stretches nine games.
Now would be the ideal time to end this run, especially with the Premiership title on the line.
The pressure will amplify should Hearts defeat Motherwell on Sunday, a result that will move the Jambos six points clear at the top.
Indeed, should that happen, a defeat for Celtic on Sunday means Derek McInnes could lead his side to the title next Wednesday when they face Falkirk.
Who will blink first? Only time will tell in this thrilling title race.
We’ve been here before, haven’t we? Rangers are heading into the final few weeks of the season with a slim chance of winning the league, before blowing it when the pressure builds.
In truth, even being in this title race was surprising given how dismal a start to the season the Gers endured under Russell Martin.
Danny Rohl stepped in and steadied the ship somewhat. Losses to Motherwell and Hearts recently, however, have extinguished those title aspirations as thoughts turn to next season.
With no major silverware won for the second consecutive campaign, will Rohl remain for the annual overhaul in the summer? That much remains to be seen.
The German boss did lead Rangers to a 3-1 victory at Parkhead back in January, yet that was when Celtic were being managed by Wilfried Nancy.
O’Neil is a different proposition. Celtic came back from two goals down to snatch a point at Ibrox in March. Following 120 minutes without a goal, Celtic won a penalty shoot-out to reach the Scottish Cup semi-finals.
It appears as though Rangers are going to finish third in a two-horse race. The planning for next season must start as soon as possible.
O’Neil will be missing Cameron Carter-Vickers, Colby Donovan, Julian Araujo, Tomas Cvancara, and Callum Osmond for the Old Firm clash.
For Rohl, left-back Tuur Rommens could be ready to return to the starting XI at Parkhead.
Elsewhere, Ryan Naderi should also be available and could well start the game on Sunday.
Despite losing at home earlier this year, Celtic are a different animal this time around. With the Light Blues faltering during the run-in, O’Neil’s men should emerge with all three points.
