Inter and Napoli are tied at the top of the table following Round 33’s results. If that were the case after the next five matches, the 2024/2025 Serie A winners wouldn’t be determined by tiebreakers but rather by a playoff between the two contenders, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The single elimination game was reintroduced in 2023. It has led to a clash between Hellas Verona and Spezia to avoid relegation, but it hasn’t been necessary to settle the title race yet. The tie-breakers would come into play to determine the location of the tilt.
Inter and Napoli shared the spoils with a one-one result in their two head-to-head meetings. The goal difference is the next parameter. The Nerazzurri have a large lead there. The same goes for total goals scored.
On the other hand, the League would weigh other factors, for instance, the risks to the public order. The away fans would have to be allowed to attend the game. They are often forbidden to when the Ultras of the two teams are feuding and there have been clashes in the past. A neutral site, like Roma’s Stadio Olimpico, would be very much on the table.
The potential date for the playoff between Napoli and Inter would be an issue if the Nerazzurri went all the way in the Champions League. Serie A will end on May 25th, while the continental competition will have its final on May 31st. There’s an international window starting on June 2nd, and the players must be released by the clubs the day before. The Italian championship was last decided in this fashion in June 1964, when Bologna topped Inter two-nil.
