With the 2026 FIFA World Cup less than a month away – and the US men’s national team’s roster reveal less than two weeks away – the Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder is shining for his club and looks poised to be an impact player for his country this summer.

“He made the difference,” head coach Jesper Sørensen said of Berhalter following a 3-2 win at FC Dallas on Wednesday. “[They] were not big chances, from where he struck the ball. It was great quality, and sometimes that’s what you need.

“He provided that in moments where you don’t expect it. It was a good performance from him, and the two goals made it special.”

Bangers only

The 2025 MLS Best XI midfielder dazzled for Vancouver at Toyota Stadium, scoring twice via beautiful right-footed shots from outside the penalty box.

His brace was of the utmost quality, with the first a blast that rattled the underside of the crossbar before going in. That goal clawed Vancouver level after Golden Boot presented by Audi candidate Petar Musa had given FC Dallas an early lead.

The second goal proved to be the game’s decisive one, curling into the far upper corner from just outside the 18-yard box to make it 3-2. It was an excellent display of finesse by Berhalter, who now has 6g/7a this season and sent Vancouver atop the Supporters' Shield standings.

“It’s something that, throughout the year, I’ve tried to improve upon,” Berhalter said. “It took time to earn the coaches’ trust. They wanted me to chill out and understand the shots I’m taking. But I’m at a point where I’m confident, they’re confident in me, and it’s just about hitting the target.”

World Cup dreaming

Berhalter’s ascendancy comes in a moment of real need for the USMNT.

There's been much discussion in recent months surrounding what the US midfield will look like at the World Cup, and news of Johnny Cardoso’s ankle injury has intensified the debate.

With his current form, Berhalter is certainly in contention to be selected by USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino, who will reveal his final roster in New York City on May 26.

“I have to keep taking it one game at a time,” Berhalter said when asked about the World Cup.

“One moment at a time.”
