Selton Sánchez headlines a group of five Athletic youngsters set to start pre-season with the first team at Lezama on Monday the sixth under Edin Terzic. As reported by as.com, they are Mikel Santos in goal, Johaneko and Monreal in defence, Sánchez in midfield, and Elijah Gift out wide, called up to cover early absences of Simón, Laporte and the Williams while aiming to convince the German coach.

Mikel Santos will reprise last summer’s experience, having trained with the seniors then and been listed in Athletic’s Champions League squads. Now promoted to the first team, he could head out on loan to the Segunda.

Johaneko, a versatile full back, featured in several friendlies during last summer’s build-up. Monreal played two Copa ties last season, against Valencia and Real Sociedad, impressing in central defence.

Selton Sánchez made 13 competitive appearances for Valverde’s first team, three as a starter. He debuted in the Champions League against Newcastle.

Elijah Gift, recruited from Liverpool’s reserve side, was included in two first-team squads last season, for the Champions League match with Sporting de Portugal and the LaLiga fixture against Real Madrid. He did not make his debut.
