Sadio Mané leads Senegal into a fourth FIFA World Cup this summer, still chasing the heights of their 2002 fairytale.
The Lions of Teranga reached the quarter-finals on their tournament debut, beating reigning champions France along the way. Russia 2018 ended in heartbreak when they were eliminated at the group stage on the fair-play tiebreaker. Qatar 2022 brought a return to the last 16 before England’s 3-0 win. Pape Thiaw’s side arrive determined to mount a deeper run this time.
The squad announcement landed in the long shadow of January’s chaotic AFCON 2025 final. Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 in Rabat through Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner, then watched CAF’s Appeal Board strip them of the title in March. The 3-0 forfeit ruling followed a brief Senegalese walk-off in protest at a stoppage-time penalty.
Senegal have taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The case continues to colour their build-up. Thiaw trimmed his preliminary 28-man group to the final 26 at a US training camp, cutting defender Moustapha Mbow and midfielder Ilay Camara.
Captain Kalidou Koulibaly anchors the defence with 103 caps to his name. Idrissa Gana Gueye, Senegal’s all-time most-capped player on 131 appearances, screens in midfield. Mané, 34 and now at Al Nassr, leads the line as the nation’s record scorer with 55 international goals.
The Liverpool legend finished as top scorer in qualifying with five goals. Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, Crystal Palace’s Ismaïla Sarr and Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye complete an attacking quartet rich in Premier League pedigree. Bayern Munich prospect Bara Ndiaye earned a maiden senior call-up after impressing during preparations.
Group I pits Senegal against France, Norway and Iraq. They open against Didier Deschamps’ France at MetLife Stadium, return to the same venue six days later to face Norway, then close their group stage in Toronto against Iraq.
