A day after the Confederation of African Football stripped Senegal of the Africa Cup title, the government requested an independent international investigation into suspected corruption within the confederation.

Two months after Senegal’s triumph, CAF on Tuesday disqualified Pape Thiaw’s team, alleging a breach of article 82 when players briefly left the pitch during the 1-0 final win over Morocco.

In a statement, the government labelled the move unprecedented and exceptionally serious, called it grossly unlawful and profoundly unjust, and said it offends fundamental sporting ethics, including fairness, loyalty and respect for what happens on the pitch.

The government intends to pursue all appropriate avenues to ensure justice and to restore the primacy of the sporting result.

The Senegalese Football Federation will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
