Sergio Gómez has shaken off his groin discomfort and trained normally at Zubieta. He completed Tuesday’s session and will travel to Germany for two friendlies against Cologne, Friday behind closed doors and Saturday with local fans present.
According to Diario Vasco, Real Sociedad returned to work on Tuesday after two days off following defeat in their first pre-season friendly against Toulouse in Tarbes. Matarazzo oversaw an afternoon session that included the left-back, who missed that match.
Dani Díaz also came through training, managing his workload like Gómez. Kubo and Guedes are stepping up, now completing sessions in Zubieta, and featured prominently in a club video of a small-sided game. Both scored with first-time finishes.
It remains to be seen whether Kubo and Guedes get minutes against Cologne. They are likely to travel to stay integrated, but we will have to wait to learn if Matarazzo uses them for their first pre-season action. The Japan international is in full health after a World Cup knee sprain that kept him off the pitch since the opening matchday, while the Portuguese has a little less rhythm.
These are the final 10 days of pre-season, with Monday 17 marking the start of the official competition week. The only player still to return is Mikel Oyarzabal, who is due to take his first full session with the group on Monday. As captain, he may drop by Zubieta over the weekend to begin sharpening up.
Real Sociedad train on Wednesday and Thursday, then fly on Thursday afternoon from Noain to Cologne for another double header. The last friendly is a marquee test on Saturday 15 against Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
