Sergio Ramos is poised to lead a takeover of Sevilla after a consortium he fronts reached an agreement in principle worth €450m, Cadena SER reports. The club are moving towards appointing a new owner in the coming months.

An American group fronted by Antonio Lappi and Fede Quintero had been in pole position, but its bid has fallen away in favour of the former Sevilla player.

After that collapse, the 39-year-old submitted the highest offer to the club’s shareholders. Earlier this month he moved to pursue ownership.

The majority bloc is led by former president Jose Maria del Nido Benavente with 45%. A group of the Ales, Carron, Guijarro and Castro families alongside A-Cab, formerly shares of 777 partners, holds 40%, and their asking price had been €500m.

Ramos hopes to have the purchase ratified by shareholders in the coming weeks, and the mood around the proposal is positive. It remains to be seen whether the takeover is completed.

If confirmed, current president Jose Maria del Nido Carrasco would not remain in his role, so a successor would be required. Ramos is currently without a club after leaving Mexican side Monterrey and has not retired. Supporters will hope this signals a path back to former glory in the coming years.
