Inter capitulated to a spectacular last-gasp Riccardo Orsolini scissor-kick volley to give Bologna victory, but above all sees Napoli catch them at the top of the Serie A table.

The Nerazzurri knocked Bayern Munich out of the Champions League quarter-final and were preparing for Wednesday’s Coppa Italia semi-final against Milan, but the pressure was on after Napoli beat Monza yesterday to go joint top. Marcus Thuram, Denzel Dumfries and Piotr Zielinski were injured, with Marko Arnautovic not fully fit, so Tucu Correa partnered Lautaro Martinez. The hosts dropped to fifth place after defeat with Atalanta, but missed Nicolò Casale, Davide Calabria, Lewis Ferguson and Lukasz Skorupski ahead of their Coppa Italia semi-final against Empoli.

Inter threatened twice in the opening minutes, first Nicola Ravaglia parrying a smart Lautaro Martinez dinked finish at the near post, then Carlos Augusto’s diving header wide from the resulting corner.

Dan Ndoye drilled just wide of the near post, but created a huge opportunity when he got past Francesco Acerbi to pull back from the by-line for a Thijs Dallinga tap-in, denied by the decisive Benjamin Pavard block to deflect it inches off target.

Alessandro Bastoni nodded a corner onto the roof of the net, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan was booked and will be suspended when Inter face Roma.

Benjamin Dominguez curled wide from a Juan Miranda free kick routine, but tension spilled over on the touchline when both Bologna coach Vincenzo Italiano and Inter assistant manager Massimiliano Farris were shown straight red cards for their argument.

Bastoni also went into the book and will be suspended against Roma, while there was a huge scare when Lautaro Martinez challenged Ravaglia for a long throw-in and flicked it onto the upright, with Miranda somehow preventing Mehdi Taremi from tapping in the rebound from point-blank range, but the referee ruled that Lautaro had fouled the goalkeeper.

Nicolò Cambiaghi nodded the Emil Holm cross wide of the far post after a series of dangerous Bologna moves, with some panicked Inter defending to keep the clean sheet.

The deadlock was finally broken in the final minute of added time, as Yann Bisseck flicked on a long throw-in to the back post, where Orsolini reacted with a sensational left-foot scissor-kick volley from seven yards.
