Lazio picked up a vital three points this evening with a 3-0 win over Genoa, with youngster Matteo Cancellieri helping the Biancocelesti on their way to victory.

The hosts dominated for large swathes of the game but were unable to turn their dominance into goals, in the face of a resilient and sturdy Lazio who were set up in a 4-2-3-1 due to an ongoing injury crisis.

Lazio started the game strongly, applying early pressure and their efforts were rewarded when a fine through ball from Taty Castellanos found Matteo Cancellieri who confidently curled the ball around Genoa goalkeeper Nicola Leali into the top corner. It was a composed finish by the young Italian who made his mark early on in the game.

Genoa grew back into the game after Lazio’s opener, with the fans in the stadium providing a real 12th man boost to the Rossoblu. As head coach Patrick Vieira watched on from the stands, his side had a couple of half-chances to level the game before the half-hour mark.

However, just as Vieira’s side looked to be growing into the game, their optimism took another heavy hit. A lovely piece of link-up play between Castellanos and Adam Marusic allowed the Argentine to put his side 2-0 up. Marusic was substituted due to an injury suffered during the goal, replaced by Sarri stalwart Elseid Hysaj.

Genoa pushed for a goal towards the end of the first half, with Mikael Egill Ellertsson and Lorenzo Colombo both denied by strong saves by Lazio keeper Provedel. The half-time whistle came at a good time for the visitors after weathering the storm in the closing ten minutes of the first 45.

The hosts started the second half just as the first ended, applying pressure on the Lazio defence and having a couple of early efforts on goal.

Around the hour mark, Genoa were awarded a penalty after Alessio Romagnoli was deemed to have made contact in the box with the ball with his arm. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned.

With 25 minutes left, Lazio extended their lead to three goals, after a free-kick whipped into the box by Luca Pellegrini resulted in a goalmouth scramble and Mattia Zaccagni appeared at the post to tap the ball in.

The hosts struggled to find their footing after Lazio’s third and looked sapped of confidence as a clinical Biancocelesti took advantage of Genoa’s shaky defence.

Cancellieri had a golden chance to secure a brace with twenty minutes to go but fired over in an effort he really should have done better with.
