Stadio Via del Mare is the venue as relegation-threatened Lecce and top-four chasing Juventus go head-to-head in a high-stakes Serie A fixture. Both sides desperately need points here to boost their late-season goals.
With only three games left to play, Lecce boast a four-point cushion over the bottom three following a precious 2-1 win at rock-bottom Pisa last weekend. Second-half goals from Lameck Banda and Walid Cheddira saw Eusebio Di Francesco’s side end a dreadful six-game winless sequence (D2, L4), returning to winning ways at the best possible moment.
However, the job is not yet done, as the Giallorossi face a tricky run-in, with a pair of difficult games against Sassuolo and Genoa on the horizon. Needless to say, this is the most challenging fixture remaining on their schedule, with under-pressure Juventus arriving in Apulia desperate to consolidate their place in the top four.
Dusan Vlahovic slotted home a stunning free-kick on his return from injury last week, but it was merely enough for a point against already-relegated Hellas Verona. Juventus fans booed out-of-sorts striker Jonathan David on his way out, refusing to hide their frustration as Luciano Spalletti’s men compromised their Champions League ambitions.
Sitting just a point clear of fifth-placed Roma, Juventus cannot afford another disappointing result here if they’re to stave off growing pressure in the race for a top-four finish and keep their destiny firmly in their own hands. With Fiorentina and Torino their next rivals, the Bianconeri know there is little margin for error heading into this ‘David vs Goliath’ clash.
Lecce
Stretching their three-game unbeaten run (W1, D2) feels almost imperative for Lecce, as nearest rivals Cremonese face Pisa, suggesting the Giallorossi could be sitting a whole lot more uncomfortably come the end of play on Sunday. However, they start this meeting as massive underdogs for a good reason, having lost their six previous home league matches against current top-seven clubs without scoring.
Speaking of Lecce’s bleak prospects in this showdown, they have yet to win a single Serie A game against a team starting this round in the upper half of the standings this term (D4, L14). If it’s any consolation, three of those four draws came in Apulia, where they’ve avoided defeat in four of their last six league matches (W2, D2).
Unsurprisingly, Juventus have been a bogey team for Lecce, with the Giallorossi going winless in their last 11 clashes against the record-time Italian champions (D4, L7). Yet, they stood their ground in December’s reverse fixture in Turin, as Di Francesco’s side held their more esteemed rivals to a 1-1 draw, with Jonathan David squandering a late penalty.
Juventus
Back-to-back draws against Milan and Verona have derailed Juventus’ spirits after three consecutive league wins, putting them in a must-win situation ahead of the weekend. Despite going unbeaten in their last nine Serie A outings (W5, D4), the Bianconeri cannot take anything for granted, knowing they’ve shared the spoils with Lecce in two of their four most recent meetings at Via del Mare (W2).
Still, three consecutive clean sheets on the road have helped Juventus string together a four-game unbeaten league run on the road (W2, D2). Another shutout here would see them go four successive Serie A away matches without conceding for the first time since January 2023. However, that’s not a foregone conclusion despite Lecce’s lowly standing.
Indeed, Juventus have managed just one away clean sheet this season against sides starting the round in the bottom six (W2, D2, L1). Furthermore, they’ve been prone to notoriously slow starts on their travels, with 15 of their 23 away league goals scored this term coming after the break.
Medon Berisha, Kialonda Gaspar, and Sadik Fofana remain in the treatment room for Lecce. Moreover, Riccardo Sottil is likely to stay on the sidelines, with Banda taking his place on the wing, looking to add to his seven goal contributions in Serie A this season.
With Vlahovic returning to action last weekend, Arkadiusz Milik and Juan Cabal remain the only notable absentees in the Juventus squad. Despite lacking match fitness, the former Fiorentina striker is likely to take David’s place in attack, with Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao expected to provide support from the wings.
Lecce (4-3-3): Falcone; Veiga, Siebert, Gabriel, Gallo; Ramadani, Coulibaly, Ngom; Pierotti, Cheddira, Banda.
Juventus (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly, Cambiaso; Thuram, Locatelli; Conceicao, McKennie, Yildiz; Vlahovic.
Juventus are no strangers to dropping points against ‘lesser’ opponents, but there’s no margin for error here. Though Lecce will likely give the Bianconeri a run for their money, we expect the visitors to take all three points.
