Benjamin Sesko struck in the sixth minute of stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Manchester United at West Ham, preserving Michael Carrick’s unbeaten start as interim head coach.
Introduced from the bench as United chased the game, the striker produced a clever, instinctive flick to deny the Hammers a crucial victory in their fight for survival. While United’s four-match winning run came to an end, the late equaliser ensured they remain fourth in the Premier League.
The first half was largely tactical, with the Hammers content to sit deep and frustrate a United side that dominated possession without carving out many clear openings.
The visitors came closest when a well-worked corner saw Luke Shaw direct the ball towards goal, only for Aaron Wan-Bissaka to produce an excellent clearance off the line.
After the break, the hosts made their pressure count. Jarrod Bowen delivered from the right and Tomás Soucek reacted quickest inside the area, poking the ball home to give the Hammers a deserved lead.
United thought they had responded almost immediately when Casemiro headed in from a Kobbie Mainoo cross, but VAR confirmed the midfielder had strayed just offside. Despite continuing to see plenty of the ball, Carrick’s side struggled to test West Ham’s goalkeeper, with SeSko and Bryan Mbeumo both failing to trouble him with late efforts.
As the game opened up, West Ham threatened on the counter, Callum Wilson and Adama Traoré both denied by timely blocks from Leny Yoro. At the other end, Joshua Zirkzee came agonisingly close, his header drifting just wide of the far post.
Just as defeat loomed, United finally found a breakthrough. In the dying seconds, Bryan Mbeumo delivered into the box and Sesko showed quick thinking to glance the ball into the net, rescuing a point and extending Carrick’s unbeaten run.
The result leaves West Ham still two points adrift of safety, while United avoid defeat and maintain their position in the top four.
