Josh Windass bent a free-kick in the 28th minute to spark Wrexham's fightback in a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough. His strike shifted the momentum for the hosts in a game that ebbed throughout.
The midfielder whipped a right-footed effort into the top left from the set piece (28.). It was the cleanest execution of his busy afternoon and set the platform for the hosts to push on.
After the restart he kept asking questions. One left-footed effort from the centre of the box was blocked (70.). He then supplied a teasing cross that Sam Smith headed narrowly wide (85.). Moments later he arrived onto a cut-back but lifted his finish too high (86.). He also drew a foul to relieve pressure in the fifth minute of second half stoppage time.
Windass finished with seven attempts, two on target, plus two key passes. He also completed 19 successful final third passes from 51 overall, underlining how he carried Wrexham's threat from dead balls and in open play.
Because his movement kept finding pockets around the edge of the area, Boro had to defend set pieces deeper and more often. That pinned them back and ensured Wrexham controlled long spells of territory.
Wrexham finish seventh, slipping from sixth on the final day. Boro remain fifth and head into the Championship promotion play-offs.
