Sunderland have released accounts for their Championship promotion campaign. That promotion was a spectacular success story, and these numbers set out the context behind it.

Sunderland Echo notes the period runs to the end of July last year, so it is not a complete Championship picture.

Across three Championship seasons the club posted cumulative losses just shy of £20 million. An operating loss of £1.1 million may look strong, but the club still relies on player sales.

Revenues moved in the right direction, with turnover up a little over £2 million, helped by the new EFL TV deal and playoff participation. Retail and merchandising fell from just under £3 million to £1.18 million despite Hummel’s popularity, though the overall picture is more complex.

Debt is rising quickly. The filings also show the ownership have shifted their approach over the past year.

The academy’s position is highlighted, with pride in last season’s success and recognition of the challenge ahead. The club also want concerts at the Stadium of Light to form part of the future.
